Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle After Deluge of Backlash After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the journey.
She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the avalanche of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had resulted from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
